A
little history - Meeting place The site of the future capital
was first occupied by two groups of Aboriginal people, the Ngunnawal
and the Ngario. The large campsites found along the banks of the Molonglo
indicate a substantial Aboriginal popu-lation in the area. In summer,
the tribes left the hot plains of the region for the high country to
the west, to feast on bogong moths. In 1820 Charles
Throsby Smith was the first European to explore the area. Four years
later, Joshua Moore took up 1000 acres (400 hectares) on the banks of
the Molonglo River, a tributary of the Murrumbidgee River. He named
his property Canberry, an Aboriginal word meaning ‘meeting place’.
Another early European settler was Robert. Visit all these historical
sites by booking with Airport Car Rental in the Australian Capital Territory.
