| Nhulunbuy
- Nhulunbuy is on the north-eastern tip of Arnhem Land,
on the Gove Peninsula. The whole peninsula is held freehold
by the Yolngu people. Intending visitors must obtain a permit
from the Northern Land Council (contact (08) 8920 5100) beforehand;
rules apply. Allow 2 weeks for processing. Originally a service
town for the bauxite-mining industry, Nhulunbuy is now the administrative
centre for the Arnhem Region as well. Access is by a year-round
daily jet air service from Darwin or Cairns, or, with permit,
by 4WD through Arnhem Land. Local car hire. A recreation permit
is required for travel outside the Nhulunbuy Town Lease (contact

Buku-Larrnggay Mulka, at Tirrkala Community, Melville Bay Rd
20 km SE: renowned community-based Aboriginal art museum; no
permit required for museum visit. Stunning beaches with tropical-blue
water, accessible by permit (fee applies). Boat charters for
game-, reef- and barramundi-fishing. Also water sports, bird
watching, croc-spotting, Yolngu guides, guided 4WD, and bauxite
